The Bucharest Tribunal ruled on Friday to lift the judicial control measure imposed on former presidential candidate Calin Georgescu in the case in which he is standing trial for legionary propaganda.

The decision is final, meaning Georgescu is no longer subject to the restrictions applied over the past year, including the prohibition on leaving the country.

"Pursuant to Art. 4251 para. (7) point 2(a) in relation to Art. 206 of the Criminal Procedure Code, the court upholds the appeal lodged by the defendant Georgescu Calin against the ruling handed down the Bucharest 1st District Court on 26.03.2026 in case file No. 24185/299/2025/a3.
It partially annuls the ruling of 26.03.2026 and issues a new decision as follows: Pursuant to Art. 362 in relation to Art. 208 para. (3) and (5) of the Criminal Procedure Code, with reference to Arts. 202 and 211 of the Criminal Procedure Code, the court finds that the preventive measure of judicial control ordered against the defendant was lawful. Based on Art. 242 para. (1) of the Criminal Procedure Code, the court orders the revocation of the judicial control measure imposed on the defendant. Final," reads the tribunal's ruling.

Calin Georgescu was sent to trial on July 2, 2025 by the Prosecutor General's Office, charged with publicly promoting the cult of persons convicted of genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes, as well as with publicly promoting fascist, legionary, racist or xenophobic ideas, doctrines or conceptions, in a repeated manner (five material acts).

According to the indictment, between June 16, 2020 and May 16, 2025, on several occasions (June 16, 2020; September 2020; October 2, 2021; September 1, 2024; and May 16, 2025), Georgescu publicly promoted fascist, legionary and xenophobic ideas through various means.

"Specifically, it was determined that the defendant repeatedly affirmed, in interviews, statements or online posts, his pro-legionary ideological consistency and his connections within the non-legionary environment with promoters of this ideology, with the aim of altering public perception of the historical classification of the Legionary Movement, attempting to normalise and revitalise legionaryism and the historical figures associated with it. He made several laudatory statements regarding Corneliu Zelea Codreanu, Ion Antonescu and Ion Mota," the prosecutors argued.
