The Romanian Gendarmerie is a fundamental state institution whose mission ultimately serves the citizens - their safety, the peace of communities, the defense of the rule of law and the protection of a public space where democratic life can function normally, Minister of the Interior Catalin Predoiu said on Friday, on the occasion of Gendarmerie Day.

April 3 marks 176 years since the establishment of the Romanian Gendarmerie, an institution with a long history and a central role for both citizens and the state.

Predoiu underlined that the Gendarmerie is a pillar of public order in Romania, present at major events and public gatherings, intervening in violent situations, protecting institutions and strategic sites, and ensuring the security of special transports. Gendarmes also carry out protection activities around schools and support other Interior Ministry structures, including in emergencies.

"In 2025, the Romanian Gendarmerie was also present wherever it was needed. As always! It was a difficult year, with public pressure, many large-scale events, tensions and a complicated social climate. And yet, the Gendarmerie remained on duty and did its duty," Predoiu said.

He added that the Gendarmerie safeguards not only public order, but also democratic life, stressing that the absence of such safeguards leads to anarchy, chaos and social vulnerability.

"In a free society, people have the right to express themselves, to participate in public life, to protest, to support ideas and causes - but all of this must take place within the framework of the law. Freedom needs order. Without public order, freedom becomes fragile and is lost. Without respect for the law, the rights of those in good faith become vulnerable. The role of the Gendarmerie is precisely this: to keep the public space open, safe and civilised, so that citizens can exercise their rights freely and with respect for the rights of others. The border between freedom and anarchy is often put under pressure and must then be defended resolutely, on the basis of the law," Predoiu concluded.
