Resilience is no longer optional, and companies must be able to anticipate risks and integrate cybersecurity measures into their strategies, Italy's ambassador to Romania Laura Aghilarre said on Tuesday at a specialist conference.

"The international context is characterised by increasing risks related to cybersecurity, cyber threats, attacks on critical infrastructures and the rapid development of technology, all of which have a direct impact on both global trade and investments. Alongside the traditional challenges, hybrid threats are therefore added, including cyberattacks and disinformation. These phenomena put pressure on essential systems and can cause disruptions in supply chains. These are dynamics that do not only concern states, but also companies of all sizes. It is therefore necessary to guarantee secure operations and effective data protection in an ever-changing digital landscape. In this context, resilience is no longer optional. Businesses need to be able to anticipate risks and integrate cybersecurity measures into their strategies," Aghilarre said.

In the ambassador's view, the financial allocation for Romania under the SAFE Programme, the second largest after Poland, highlights the strategic importance of the country.

"In this scenario, I must emphasise that Europe's role is central. Strengthening Europe's capacity to act in a coordinated manner is essential to meet these challenges. It is necessary to develop and strengthen a European defence ecosystem capable of guaranteeing security and contributing to long-term stability. Investments in this direction are essential, and the SAFE Programme represents an important step for our strategic autonomy. The allocation of EUR 16.8 billion to Romania, the second largest under the programme after Poland, reflects the strategic importance of this country. The investment highlights both Romania's role on Europe's eastern flank and its capabilities to contribute to security and industrial objectives. Italy is a historic partner of Romania and in the security and defence sector we want to further strengthen cooperation. Together with the Italian companies already operational in Romania, we can make the connection between the two countries even stronger. Italy will continue to support its own entrepreneurial community abroad,"Aghilarre said.

Confindustria Romania and the Employers' Federation of Industries and Entrepreneurs in Romania (FPIAR) organised on Tuesday, the event "Cybersecurity, Technology and Legal Aspects: Two Sides of the Same Coin".
