President of the Romanian Bobsleigh and Luge Federation (FRBS) Sorina Ticu said on Monday evening upon the return of Romania's delegation from the Winter Olympic Games in Milano-Cortina, that the 5th place secured by Mihai Tentea and George Iordache in 2-man bobsleigh event brings Romania bobsleigh back into the world elite.
"We enjoyed the event, a highly contested competition across all sports. I am glad that the Romanian bobsleigh made an impression in Milano-Cortina. We thank everyone for the congratulations, each encouragement was warmly received by us there. We rejoiced together in this success which brings Romanian bobsleigh back into the world elite," the FRBS President said at the "Henri Coanda" Airport.
The head coach of Romania's bobsleigh team, Iulian Pacioianu said that the 5th place in Milano-Cortina matters enormously for the winter sports in Romania.
"We hoped to achieve a good result, but it turned out even better than we thought. We aimed to be among the top ten at the Olympic Games, but we secured a 5th place and were the 3rd nation overall. It matters enormously for us, for our team, for the federation, for the winter sports movement," Pacioianu mentioned.
Mihai Cristian Tentea and George Iordache secured Romania's best result at the Winter Olympic Games in the past 34 years, finishing 5th in the 2-man bobsleigh event in Milano-Cortina.
This is Romania's best result at the Winter Olympic Games since 1992 (Albertville), when Ioan Apostol and Liviu Cepoi placed 4th in the men's doubles luge event.
Mihai Tentea and George Iordache delivered Romania's best bobsleigh performance since the 1972 Olympic Games in Sapporo.
Romania's only medal at the Winter Olympic Games remains the bronze won in the 2-man bobsleigh event by Ion Panturu and Nicolae Neagoe in 1968, in Grenoble.
Romania finished 17th in the 4-man bobsleigh event, with all five members of the team competing across the four runs: Mihai Tentea, George Iordache, Constantin Dinescu, Andrei Nica and Mihai Pacioianu.
