The Ukrainian citizen, who had been in critical condition on the mountain and was being searched for by mountain rescuers, has been found dead by rescue teams, the director of the Maramures County Public Mountain Rescue Service, Dan Benga, informed on Wednesday night.
'Mountain rescuers reached the young Ukrainian together with the Border Police. Unfortunately, the 28-year-old man is deceased. He was lightly dressed in a thin tracksuit, without socks, with bare ankles and wearing trainers,' said Dan Benga.
Mountain rescuers were alerted on Wednesday that the young Ukrainian had remained on the mountain and was experiencing health problems.
The person who alerted rescuers was another Ukrainian found on the mountain, with whom the young man had crossed the border through the Maramures Mountains.
'At around 17:00, a Ukrainian citizen was detained by the Border Police in the commune of Poienile de sub Munte, at the foot of the mountain. He reported a critical situation. The victim was located approximately 100 metres inside Romanian territory, near the border marker. According to the companion's statements, the man complained of extreme weakness and swelling in his leg and, after a short break, became completely immobilised. He was left on an improvised bed' made of fir branches to protect him from direct contact with the snow and from hypothermia,' Dan Benga explained on Wednesday.
A joint team of mountain rescuers and Border Police officers climbed into the Maramures Mountains to recover the young man, but he was found dead.
'Forensic specialists have also been notified and will initiate the procedures required in such cases, after which, following the completion of legal formalities, his evacuation and transport to the base will be carried out,' Dan Benga added.
