Defense Minister Radu Miruta announces that Army divers have recovered the body of another deceased person from the sunken tugboat 8.6 kilometers off the Midia Port, at a depth of 26 meters.
"The Army's help was requested, they intervened, isolated the area, brought sonar, a pressure chamber, two teams of divers went to a depth of 26 meters, found the wreckage sunk with the keel up, and recovered the body of a deceased person. Congratulations to our colleagues from the Naval Forces for their unconditional willingness to provide support, for the professionalism of the intervention in difficult conditions and for the ability to solve the case for which their help was requested," Miruta wrote on Facebook on Wednesday.
He recalled that, during the morning, the Romanian tugboat Astana, assisting an oil tanker in the Black Sea, from the first data, following some wrong maneuvers, sank 8.6 km off the coast of the Midia port.
"Around noon, the Romanian Naval Authority, which was coordinating the situation, requested the support of the Army. When my colleagues arrived there, the tugboat was completely submerged. The Romanian tugboat Astana was towing the oil tanker Amades, under the flag of the Marshall Islands, and was about to reach the Midia Marine Terminal, an offshore terminal used for loading and unloading crude oil," the minister specified.
According to ISU Dobrogea, the tugboat had five people on board. After its sinking, one person out of the five was taken ashore and resuscitation maneuvers were applied, later being declared dead.
