President Nicusor Dan is set to attend the meeting of the European Council and the Euro Summit in an expanded format, in Brussels, on Thursday and Friday.

According to the Presidential Administration, the agenda includes major topics for the European Union, largely interconnected and reflecting the current global dynamics. These include strengthening the EU's economic competitiveness, the situation in the Middle East, support for Ukraine, the future European budget, as well as the measures needed to reinforce the European Union's security and defence.

European leaders will also hold discussions with the UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, on the geopolitical situation and multilateralism.

The main theme of the meeting will be boosting the Union's economic competitiveness and strengthening the single market by translating conclusions agreed at previous meetings into concrete measures and clear deadlines. For Romania, a priority is identifying urgent solutions to reduce high energy prices, which affect both households and industry. The Presidential Administration underlines the need for a long-term strategy based on developing energy interconnectivity projects and harnessing domestic clean energy resources. Romania supports secure access to resources, diversification of partnerships, and avoiding dominant positions, in order to protect the EU's competitiveness and economic security.

The situation in the Middle East and its impact on energy prices will also be key points of discussion. European leaders will consider ways in which the European Union can contribute to reducing tensions and stabilising the situation.

Nicusor Dan will emphasise that it is essential for European citizens, including Romanian nationals in the region, to be protected, and for the effects of this conflict on the global economy, inflation, energy prices and trade flows to be limited. The situation in Gaza will also be analysed by European leaders.

Another topic at the Brussels meeting will be the continuation of support for Ukraine. European leaders will also discuss the possibility of unlocking the first tranche of payments from the 90 billion euros financial support package for Ukraine, agreed in December 2025. The Presidential Administration notes that Nicusor Dan will insist on maintaining pressure on Russia through sanctions, given their already visible effects.

In the field of security and defence, discussions will focus on more effective coordination of investments in the European defence industry and improving military mobility. In this regard, Romania firmly supports projects that strengthen security on the Eastern Flank, in complementarity with NATO. Strengthening these capabilities is essential to respond to current challenges and to ensure the protection of European citizens.

With regard to the future Multiannual Financial Framework of the European Union for 2028-2034, the President of Romania will underline the importance of adequate funding to support both national and European objectives, particularly in terms of economic competitiveness.
