Romanian tennis player Sorana Cirstea qualified, on Thursday evening, for the semifinals of the Transylvania Open tournament (WTA 250), with total prizes of 283,347 dollars and hosted by BTarena in Cluj-Napoca, after defeating Austrian Anastasia Potapova, 7-5, 6-4.
Cirstea (35 years old, no. 36 WTA), the third seed, knocked out the defending champion after two hours of play and reaches the semifinals for the first time.
The Romanian is in her third participation at the Transylvania Open, and in the first two (2023, 2025) she lost in the inaugural round.
Cirstea now has 2-1 in direct matches with the player of Russian origin (24 years old, no. 58 WTA). Potapova won in 2019, in the quarterfinals in Budapest, with 6-4, 6-7 (5/7), 7-5, and Sorana won in 2021, in the round of 16 in Istanbul, with 7-6 (8/6), 6-4, on the way to the title.
Cirstea secured a check of 12,331 dollars and 98 WTA points, and in the penultimate act she will face the winner between the Ukrainian Daria Snigur and the Chinese Yue Yuan.
In doubles, the Romanians Jaqueline Cristian/Gabriela Ruse were defeated by the Chinese Xinyu Wang/Saisai Zheng with 6-3, 2-6, 10-5, in the semifinals, after one hour and 12 minutes.
Cristian and Ruse remain with 4,390 dollars and 98 WTA points in doubles.
