Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan said on Friday in Iasi that funding for the two motorway endpoints in Moldavia - Iasi-Ungheni and Suceava-Siret - has been approved by the European Commission, with the projects considered essential for regional connectivity and for the defence component.

"First of all, we will discuss how to put into practice the most important connectivity project in Moldavia, the two motorway endpoints towards Suceava-Siret and Iasi-Ungheni, whose funding was approved yesterday by the European Commission," Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan told the press during his visit to Iasi to hold talks with mayors from the county.

According to him, the investments are financed through the Security Action for Europe (SAFE) programme, a defence-oriented scheme that also supports dual-use infrastructure, both civilian and military, with the completion deadline set for 2030.

"It is important that, alongside the activity of the Ministry of Transport and the companies implementing the projects, local administrations create the necessary conditions so that works can begin as soon as possible," Bolojan said.

The design and execution contracts are to be signed in the spring of this year, with works expected to start in the autumn or, at the latest, in the spring of next year, the prime minister added.

"It is important to clarify what we can also do at local level to complete these two projects," Bolojan further stressed.

His visit to Iasi also includes discussions with representatives of local authorities in Iasi County on budgetary and administrative measures for the current year. Topics include the state budget due to be approved in February, local taxes and duties set in December, as well as funding through the Anghel Saligny programme.

"Another reason why I am here today and tomorrow in Botosani, as I told you, is to discuss with local administrations the measures currently being taken in public administration, which means the state budget to be approved in February, issues related to local taxes and duties adopted in December, funding through the Anghel Saligny programme, and all matters related to local administration, so that we create conditions for mayors to perform and for administration to serve citizens," Ilie Bolojan said.

On Tuesday evening, the Ministry of Development, Public Works and Administration launched into public consultation a draft law on administrative measures aimed at increasing financial capacity and improving the efficiency of central and local public administration. The government is expected to assume responsibility for this draft.

On Thursday evening, the government said it welcomed the European Commission's approval of Romania's application for funding under the SAFE programme.

According to a government press release sent to AGERPRES, the projects included in Romania's application will be made public next week. On the same subject, Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan said on Thursday evening, in a post on his Facebook page, that among the projects to receive SAFE funding are the motorways in Moldavia: Pascani-Suceava-Siret and Pascani-Iasi-Ungheni.
