Romania will participate in Francophonie Month in Sweden with a screening of "The Secret of Pin-Up Island" on March 17 at the Zita cinema in Stockholm.
The event is organised, in keeping with tradition, by the Romanian Cultural Institute (ICR) in Stockholm in partnership with the Embassy of Romania to the Kingdom of Sweden, the ICR Stockholm said in a statement sent to AGERPRES on Wednesday.
"The Secret of Pin-Up Island" / "Secretul insulei Pin-Up" (2024) is a Romanian psychological fantasy feature film directed by Alecs Nastoiu that explores a revolutionary therapy for female depression based on artificial intelligence.
"The heroine, Alesia, undergoes a hypnotic experience that transports her into a virtual world where reality and fantasy blend, forcing her to confront traumas and demons' from the past in order to regain her inner balance," reads the press release.
The film stars Rina Gri, Beatrice Rubica, Ivy Chumley and Lora Djurovic.
Produced by Alegrias Pictures and GAT Films Transilvania and filmed in the Targu Mures area, 'The Secret of Pin-Up Island' is performed in English and will be screened in Stockholm with French subtitles.
It is the first Romanian sci-fi film to win the Best Production Design award at the 49th edition of the prestigious Boston Sci-Fi Film Festival (2024). At the same event, the Embassy Theater also awarded the team present at the screening its Excellence Award, an annual distinction recognising outstanding contributions to cinema.
The film was also screened at the Transilvania International Film Festival (TIFF) in June 2024.
Francophonie Month in Sweden is an annual cultural event held in March under the banner Mois de la Francophonie, bringing together cultural institutions, embassies and educational partners to promote the French language and the cultural diversity of the Francophone world.
The programme includes a series of cultural and educational events held in several cities across Sweden, aimed at both the general public and specialised audiences. The agenda features film screenings focusing on themes such as feminism and the impact of new technologies on individuals and society.
The event is coordinated by the French Institute in Sweden in cooperation with the embassies of Francophone states accredited to Stockholm, as well as Swedish cultural, educational and artistic institutions.
