Representatives of the cities bidding to host the future EU Customs Agency (EUCA) - including Bucharest - will take part on Wednesday in a Q&A session with members of the European Parliament's Internal Market and Consumer Protection Committee (IMCO), the EU legislature said.

The nine cities that responded to the call for applications and submitted their bids are Liege (Belgium), Malaga (Spain), Lille (France), Zagreb (Croatia), Rome (Italy), The Hague (Netherlands), Warsaw (Poland), Porto (Portugal) and Bucharest (Romania).

During the exchange of views, MEPs will ask candidates to outline their infrastructure plans and demonstrate their capacity to host a centralised authority in an increasingly complex trading environment, the EP said.

This step is part of the internal parliamentary procedure, allowing MEPs to examine, assess and compare the applications ahead of the internal vote on the EP's preferred location.

The European Commission has already evaluated the nine applications.

The EU is establishing the European Customs Authority (EUCA) as part of a major reform of the EU Customs Code. The agency will coordinate future customs cooperation, ensure risk management and operate the new general customs IT system, the Customs Data Centre.

The European Parliament and the Council will jointly decide on the location of the EUCA headquarters.
