Ukrainian army air defence systems shot down a drone on Friday morning near the Romanian border, 100 metres from the locality of Chilia Veche, and specialised teams are prepared to begin a search operation for any possible debris from the aerial vehicle that may have fallen on national territory, the Ministry of National Defence (MApN) reports.

According to a press release from MApN, the Russian Federation launched new air attacks on Ukrainian Danube ports on Friday morning.

MApN radar systems detected a drone in Ukrainian airspace heading towards the northern part of Tulcea County, and at 08:45 am a new RO-ALERT message was issued to the population in the area.

According to the air policing procedures, two F-16 Fighting Falcon aircraft from Fetesti Air Base took off at 09:04 to conduct reconnaissance and monitor the airspace.

'A few minutes later, the aircraft confirmed radar contact with the target 9 km from Chilia Veche, on Ukrainian territory, and at 09:13 the drone was shot down by Ukrainian army air defence systems, 100 metres from the locality. Given its very close proximity to the border, specialised teams are prepared to begin a search operation for any possible debris from the aerial vehicle that may have fallen on national territory. At 10:12 the air alert was lifted,' MApN stated.

The Ministry of Defence is continuously monitoring the situation in close cooperation with NATO allies.

Earlier, MApN announced that at 06:57 its radar systems had detected another drone in Ukrainian airspace heading towards the northern part of Tulcea County. Air defence systems were placed on alert, but the aerial vehicle did not enter Romanian airspace.

'During the morning of 27 February, at 06:57, MApN radar systems detected a drone in Ukrainian airspace heading towards the northern part of Tulcea County. Air defence systems were placed on alert, and at 07:17 a warning message was issued to the population via the RO-ALERT system for the affected area,' an MApN press release sent to AGERPRES said.

According to the same source, the aerial vehicle did not enter national airspace and at 07:47 the alert status was lifted.
