Border police at the Albita Border Crossing Point (PTF), in cooperation with customs officers, discovered 50 unfired 22 LR cartridges hidden in a bag of sweets on a coach operating a regular route from the Republic of Moldova to Italy.

According to a press release from the Iasi Border Police Territorial Inspectorates (ITPF), the coach was driven by a citizen of the Republic of Moldova, who told authorities that he had collected the package to deliver it to someone in Italy, unaware of its contents.

"Based on the risk profile, a thorough inspection was ordered and scanning of the luggage identified 50 unfired 22 LR cartridges hidden inside a package that appeared to be a bag of sweets. As the coach driver did not possess the legal documents required for the transport in question, both he and the vehicle were subjected to additional checks, during which he stated that he was carrying the package at the request of a fellow national and was unaware of its contents. Further checks identified a 31-year-old woman, a citizen of the Republic of Moldova, who said she had collected the package to deliver it to someone in Italy. (...) In accordance with legal provisions, all the discovered goods were seized to allow the continuation and completion of the investigation. The case is being investigated for the offences of violating the arms and ammunition regime and attempted aggravated smuggling," the quoted source mentioned.

The investigations were conducted with the support of specialists from the Weapons, Explosives and Dangerous Substances Service within the Vaslui County Police Inspectorate (IPJ), criminal investigators from the Vaslui Border Police Territorial Service and officers from the Illegal Migration and Cross-Border Crime Unit of the Husi Border Police Sector.
