Authorities issue 7.8% fewer building permits in January

In January 2026, the authorities issued 7.8% fewer building permits for residential buildings compared with the same period in 2025, according to data the National Institute of Statistics (INS) sent to AGERPRES on Friday.

Thus, in January 2026, 1,768 building permits were issued for residential buildings, down 7.8% compared with January 2025, with a total usable floor area of 532,378 sqm, up 13.5%. Of the total number of permits for residential buildings, 73.7% were for rural areas. In January 2026, a decrease in the number of building permits issued for residential buildings compared with the previous month was recorded, down by 150 permits.

By development region, this decrease was reflected in the following regions: West, down 85 permits, Centre, down 48, North-East, down 43, South-East, down 28, and Bucharest-Ilfov, down 10. Increases were recorded in the following development regions: South-West Oltenia, up 33 permits, North-West, up 19, and South-Muntenia, up 12.

In January 2026, 377 building permits were also issued for non-residential buildings, up 9.3% compared with January 2025, with a total usable floor area of 175,903 sqm, down 51.7%.

Compared with the previous month, January 2026 saw a decrease in the usable floor area for permits issued for non-residential buildings, down 188,016 sqm. By development region, this decrease was reflected in the following regions: South-West Oltenia, down 180,494 sqm, North-West, down 17,203, South-East, down 16,634, Centre, down 16,260, and North-East, down 6,817.

Increases were recorded in the following development regions: South-Muntenia, up 20,425 sqm, West, up 15,025 sqm, and Bucharest-Ilfov, up 13,942 sqm.
