The Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAE) has asked the authorities in Ukraine to maintain the current network of schools and secondary schools with teaching in Romanian, president of the Mihai Eminescu Cultural Society in Chernivtsi Vasile Bacu told AGERPRES on Sunday.

According to him, the information was conveyed to representatives of the Romanian community in the Chernivtsi region by officials of the Consulate General of Romania in Chernivtsi during informal meetings.

'We were informed that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs sent a diplomatic note to the Embassy of Ukraine in Bucharest requesting the preservation of the current network of schools and, implicitly, of secondary schools. It is a very good step. It is good that there is dialogue between Bucharest and Kyiv and I hope there will be positive results in the interest of both sides,' Bacu said.

A new education law is due to enter into force in Ukraine starting from 1 September 2027. The legislative act, which has already been adopted, provides for major changes in the structure of educational institutions, resulting in the disappearance of dozens of Romanian secondary schools and schools in the Chernivtsi region.
