Romanians enjoy spending their holiday at the seaside and at the beach (39%), and more than a quarter of them (27%) plan their main vacation in August, followed by July (20%), according to a survey published by the global fintech company Revolut and conducted by Dynata.

The survey shows a clear preference for summer travel, with 60% of all planned trips concentrated between June and September. While seaside or ocean destinations dominate across all demographic groups (39%), city breaks (19%) and sports-adventure trips (12%) remain popular alternatives. The motivations behind these trips also reveal a deeper trend: the main reason for traveling in 2026 is "mental refreshment" (35%), followed by the desire to escape financial worries and work-related stress.

Last year, during the holiday season (May 1 - September 30), Revolut customers in Romania spent over 575 million euros in the top ten summer destinations: Greece, Italy, Germany, Spain, the United Kingdom, Bulgaria, the Netherlands, France, Turkey and Hungary. They also made more than 23.8 million payments with their Revolut cards in these countries (+3% compared to the same period the previous year, adjusted for customer-base growth). The data also shows increased spending in more distant or exotic destinations such as Macao, Antigua and Barbuda, Nicaragua, Barbados, Hong Kong and Argentina.

Revolut's data highlights significant generational differences, especially in how Romanians perceive travel experiences. For Generation Z (42%) and millennials (40%), a holiday is essential for mental health. By contrast, more than half of boomers (52%) say they do not feel the need to "escape" responsibilities, viewing travel more as relaxation than as an escape. Millennials also see holidays as a way to forget financial pressures and daily expenses more than other generations do (16% vs. 14% for Gen Xers).

Although both men and women appreciate the beach, their secondary preferences differ. Men are far more drawn to adrenaline, with 17% choosing sports or adventure, compared with only 6% of women. Women, on the other hand, show a stronger preference for spa retreats (10%) and "mental reset" getaways.

Revolut is a global fintech company that helps customers get more from their money. Launched in 2015 in the United Kingdom, Revolut initially offered currency exchange and money transfers. Today, more than 70 million customers worldwide use its dozens of innovative products and make over one billion transactions per month globally.
