The Cluj Prefecture announced on Friday that the Prosecutor's Office with the Dej Court has opened a criminal case in rem in the case of the death of 214 animals - bison, buffalo, deer and roe deer - at a farm in Recea Cristur.
"The Prosecutor's Office with the Dej Court has opened a criminal case in terms of committing several crimes, namely aggravated theft, burying any type of waste, substance or object, abandoning, throwing and/or hiding waste, as well as the intentional killing of animals. The criminal investigation is currently underway in rem", according to a release sent by the Cluj Prefecture.
According to the cited source, a joint control commission was established at the Prefect's Institution level on Monday, February 16, consisting of representatives of authorities with responsibilities in the sanitary-veterinary field, environmental protection, water management and public order.
"Following the checks carried out February 16-18, 2026, on the premises of the Recea-Cristur farm, with an area of 450 hectares, 214 animal corpses were identified, namely 74 bison, 42 buffalo, 98 deer and roe deer, all in various stages of decomposition. At the same time, live animals in a precarious state of health were identified, with suspicions of failure to ensure the minimum conditions of feeding and veterinary assistance. The veterinary check revealed that the animals were not fed properly and that they had not received the necessary medication and vaccinations in recent years. The farm no longer had a contract with a veterinarian as of February 1, 2026. According to the national report of farms from National Sanitary Veterinary and Food Safety Authority, the companies that manage the farm from Recea Cristur had a number of 524 animals in 2025", the Cluj Prefecture also shows.
"Today, February 20, a team formed by representatives of public institutions, together with veterinarians, representatives of Cluj University of Agronomic Sciences and Veterinary Medicine, criminologists and police, continued the on-site investigations, one of the goals being to identify the causes that led to the death of the animals. The institutions involved continue the control and intervention actions on a permanent basis, and the evolution of the situation will be communicated transparently, depending on the conclusions of the ongoing checks", the cited source mentions.
