Romania has adopted, together with Albania, Bulgaria, Italy and North Macedonia, the Tirana Ministerial Declaration at a meeting on Corridor VIII, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on Monday.
The five countries reiterate the political, economic and strategic importance of the project, which aims to address long-standing connectivity gaps in South-East Europe.
The declaration also underlines the importance of the Black Sea and the Western Balkans as economic areas with significant potential for further development.
Corridor VIII plays a key role in that, by facilitating trade flows and improving regional and European supply chains. Both the private sector and local communities have to benefit from the development of the Corridor that increases the resilience of regional economies and generates investment opportunities, according to MAE.
Corridor VIII also enhances military mobility, contributing directly to the security of the Alliance's South-Eastern and Eastern flanks.
The five countries have also committed to intensifying joint efforts to mobilise financial resources from EU instruments, including the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF).
"Romania's participation in this meeting adds to the country's other sustained efforts to strengthen security on the Eastern flank and to increase national and local prosperity by developing of projects of strategic interest," MAE said.
