The birth certificate of revolutionary sculptor Constantin Brancusi, along with the original marriage certificate of his parents, went on display Thursday at the Art Galleries in Targu Jiu as part of the events marking 150 years since the birth of the artist.
Both documents are showcased together with other archival materials in the exhibition "Brancusi - Beginnings".
"The County Branch of the National Archives is presenting two documents, one of which has never before been exhibited in such a setting. In keeping with the theme of this exhibition, 'Brancusi - Beginnings', we decided to bring forward the marriage certificate of Constantin Brancusi's parents, Nicolae and Maria Brancusi, dating from 1872 - a document more than 150 years old. The second is the document that attests to the existence of the genius himself: his birth certificate. These are complemented by a series of other equally valuable documents on display," said Cristina Vasiloiu, director of the National Archives Gorj County Branch.
The exhibition also features the original photograph on which Brancusi sketched the Endless Column, as well as his "Écorché".
"Today we are focusing strictly on 'Beginnings', because throughout this year there will be more events dedicated to different stages of Brancusi's life. And for the first time in Targu Jiu, 'The Flayed Man' - as Brancusi himself called it - is being shown. Many initially viewed this work as a teaching model, but when looking at this Écorché, one can sense both the sadness of a departing man, perhaps the artist himself at that moment, and the satisfaction of leaving something behind, offering his body to be studied. For the first time today in Targu Jiu, we also have on display what I call the 'Birth certificate of the Endless Column' - the photograph on which Brancusi first drew the Column," declared Targu Jiu deputy mayor Adrian Tudor.
The exhibition also includes two letters sent by Brancusi to engineer Stefan Georgescu-Gorjan, a telegram, and an album from Brummer Gallery dated December 1926, signed by the sculptor.
