Turnover in wholesale trade (except for the trade of motor vehicles and motorcycles) recorded declines both in gross series and in seasonally and business-day adjusted series in January this year compared with the same period in 2025, according to data published on Friday by the National Institute of Statistics (INS).
Thus, in the first month of 2026, as a gross series, wholesale trade turnover fell by 2.8%, due to decreases in non-specialised wholesale trade (-15.2%), wholesale trade of raw agricultural products and living stock (-8.4%), wholesale trade of food, beverages and tobacco (-7%), specialised wholesale trade of other products (-3.4%), and wholesale trade of other machinery, equipment and supplies (-2%).
By contrast, increases were recorded in wholesale trade intermediation activities (+22%), wholesale trade of non-food consumer goods (+0.9%), and wholesale trade of information and telecommunications equipment (+0.5%).
According to the same source, wholesale trade turnover (except for motor vehicles and motorcycles), as a seasonally and business-day adjusted series, decreased by 0.5% in January 2026 compared with the same period of the previous year.
Compared with December 2025, in January this year, wholesale trade turnover, as a gross series, dropped by 23.1%, amid declines in wholesale trade of other machinery, equipment and supplies (-47.9%), wholesale trade of IT and telecommunications equipment (-35.6%), non-specialised wholesale trade (-28.4%), wholesale trade intermediation activities (-24.9%), wholesale trade of raw agricultural products and living stock (-23.5%), wholesale trade of food, beverages and tobacco (-23.3%), wholesale trade of non-food consumer goods (-12.8%), and specialised wholesale trade of other products (-12%).
On the other hand, as an adjusted series, turnover in this sector decreased by 4.7% month-on-month.
