Romanian female high school students won first place in Europe at the 2026 European Girls' Mathematical Olympiad (EGMO), held in Bordeaux, France, and ranked second overall in the country standings, after China.

According to the Ministry of Education and Research, the competition in France brought together 247 contestants from 66 countries.

Malina-Carla Pavel, from the 'Alexandru Odobescu' National College in Pitesti, won a gold medal with the highest score among participants from official countries. Aida Mitroi and Carina Maria Viespescu, from the International Computer High School of Bucharest, also received gold medals, while their colleague Ioana Stroe was awarded a bronze medal.

The Romanian team was coordinated by Andrei Eckstein, lecturer at the Polytechnic University of Timisoara, and Anca Baltariga, teacher at the International Computer High School of Bucharest.

This international mathematics Olympiad opens the series of four such competitions in which Romania is participating during the 2025-2026 academic year.

The scientific coordination of the team was ensured by the leadership of the Romanian Mathematical Sciences Society (SSMR), while the organisational coordination was handled by the Ministry of Education and Research.
