Electricity price increases by more than 57% in March

Electricity continued to record the largest price increase over the past year, rising by 57.2% in March 2026 compared with the same month in 2025, following the removal of the price cap scheme, according to data released by the National Institute of Statistics (INS) and sent to AGERPRES on Tuesday.

Among foodstuffs, the steepest price increases during this period were again recorded for coffee, whose price rose by 23.29%. Fresh fruit became 14.23% more expensive year-on-year, while the prices of fruit and fruit preserves increased by 11.79%.

Prices in the category of sugar, confectionery products and honey rose by 11.16%.

Other notable increases were recorded for cow's milk (9.69%), bread (9.86%), and beef (11.47%), while poultry meat rose by 7.73%.

According to the statistics, egg prices increased by 14.63% over the same period.

In the category of alcoholic beverages, the price of beer rose by 7.74% over the past year, while wine prices increased by 6.19%.

Further significant price rises were recorded for fresh fish (+7.91%), oil (+7.31%), citrus fruit (+9.35%), and pork (+3.08%).

The INS notes that there were also price decreases in March compared with March 2025 for certain food products, such as potatoes (-11.08%), dried beans and other vegetables (-5.01%), flour (-3.38%), and maize flour (-1.78%).

A slight decrease of up to one percent year-on-year was recorded for sugar, whose price fell by 0.52%.

Among non-food goods, the most significant price increases in March continued to be seen in electricity, which rose by 57.2% following the removal of the support scheme capping electricity prices.

Other price increases in this category were recorded for thermal energy (13.41%), books, newspapers and magazines (10.11%), detergents (9.89%), and tobacco and cigarettes (7.42%).

Last but not least, the price of medicines rose by 4.13% in March, while fuel prices increased by 12.93%, representing a rise of 8.74 percentage points compared with the increase recorded in February 2026.

Between March 2025 and March 2026, only one price decrease was recorded in this category, namely for gas, which fell by 7.08%.

In the services category, the largest price increases in March 2026 compared with the same month in 2025 were again recorded for rail tickets, which rose by 24.40%, followed by water, sewerage and sanitation services (+15.49%), hygiene and cosmetic services (+14.12%), and other industrial-type services (+15.68%).

Other significant increases over the year were recorded for car repair services (+13.55%) and services for making and repairing footwear and clothing (+13.91%).

Rents increased by 8.26% over the past year. At the same time, healthcare services became more expensive by 12.26%, urban transport fares rose by 8.88%, and interurban road transport by 9.48%.

The only price decrease in this category continued to be recorded for air transport services, which fell by 7.49% compared with the same period last year.

Postal service tariffs, which had decreased in previous months, rose by 9.79% in March 2026 compared with March 2025.
