President Nicusor Dan on Thursday sent a message to the Muslim community in Romania on the occasion of the start of the Ramadan fasting month, emphasising that this holy period is an opportunity to reflect on the spiritual dimension of existence.
'At the beginning of the Ramadan fasting month, I extend my warm greetings to the leadership of the Muslim Cult and to the entire Muslim community in Romania, including ethnic Turks and Tatars. This sacred period for Muslim believers invites us to regard with respect the spiritual, cultural and historical heritage that the Muslim community in Romania has given to our country, contributing to interethnic dialogue and to the harmonious meeting of religions and cultures in the spirit of peace, hospitality and respect for diversity. The holy month of Ramadan is an occasion to reflect on the spiritual dimension of life, to look upon our fellow human beings with compassion, and to offer comfort and concrete help to those in need, marginalised or vulnerable, with generosity and a genuine openness to dialogue,' the president's message reads, agerpres reports.
The head of state highlighted the importance of cultivating a space for encounter between major religious traditions.
'In a world threatened by the dissolution of spiritual and moral values, as well as by the rise of extremist movements - many of which are fuelled by the instrumentalisation and radicalisation of religion in contemporary societies - we understand how important it is to nurture a space for encounter between the great religious traditions. They encourage us to respect one another, to draw closer through a better understanding of spiritual roots and specific traditions, and to show solidarity in achieving the common good. The success of our efforts to live together in harmony and truth will determine the future of humanity and of the world,' Nicusor Dan added.
He expressed his gratitude for the contribution of the Muslim community to Romania's democratic and European path, expressing 'full confidence that we will continue to support, in the name of the values we share, the harmonious coexistence and prosperity of Romania.'
'The message of a religion endures when it is founded on dignity, tradition, memory, responsibility and love of one's neighbour. Ramadan, as the sacred time of the revelation of the Quran, reminds us that, beyond religious differences, we are united as citizens of this country by the same need for meaning, hope, spiritual renewal and communion. May this period of fasting, prayer and charity bring the Muslim community in Romania the joy of a new beginning, both within families and in the wider community. Ramadan Karim!' concluded Nicusor Dan.
