AGERPRES special correspondent Oana Ghita reports: The decision to make Romania's military bases available to the United States came after Washington expressed a need, to which Romania responded promptly, President Nicusor Dan said on Thursday in Brussels at a joint press conference with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte.

"There were several components - two of them strengthen the Deveselu shield, providing additional protection for Romania and for the part of Europe it defends, and we have ongoing discussions with the United States on several levels, but this was not a negotiation. It was a need our ally had, and we acted swiftly to accommodate it," the head of state explained.

For his part, the NATO Secretary General added: "That is what allies do."

Nicusor Dan also said that "everything is a negotiation", adding that Romania has already received something in return - the missile defence shield at Deveselu.

Asked whether Romania would "come out well" in future negotiations with the United States, he replied: "It already has."
