Electric vehicle registrations, up 152pct in March (preliminary data)

Registrations of new passenger cars in Romania increased 4.7% in March this year compared with the same period in 2025, while the "fully electric" segment recorded a surge of 152%, according to preliminary data the Association of Automobile Manufacturers and Importers (APIA) published on Wednesday.

According to data centralised from the Directorate-General for Driving Licences and Vehicle Registration (DGPCI), electrified passenger cars recorded a 27% increase in March compared with the previous year.

Overall, new passenger car registrations rose by 4.7% year-on-year, while fully electric cars recorded a 152% increase, reaching 679 units.

At the same time, plug-in hybrid cars reported a 49% increase in registrations in March 2026 compared with March 2025, totalling 750 units.

In the ranking of new passenger car registrations, the top three positions are held by Dacia, with 1,856 units, followed by Skoda (990) and Toyota and Volkswagen (922 units each).

APIA mentions that the total passenger car market declined by 19% in the first three months of this year compared with the same period last year.
