The Babes-Bolyai University (UBB) in Cluj-Napoca will participate as a partner in the European consortium of the JEMILE project - Journalism Education Enhancing Media and Information Literacy in Europe (Engaging Journalism Schools in the Development of Media and Information Education in Europe), the institution informs on Wednesday.

The project brings together four universities and two NGOs from Finland, Spain, Romania, Latvia, and Ukraine, and will be implemented with the support of Reporters Without Borders, the European Journalism Training Association, the International Press Institute, the Forum for European Journalism Students, Mohyla School of Journalism (Ukraine), the Latvian Platform for Development Cooperation, and the Finnish National Audiovisual Institute.

"The initiative aims to place media and information education at the heart of journalism education and practice, thereby contributing to strengthening trust in news, quality journalism, and democracy, at a time when disinformation is recognised as a major global risk and a threat to democratic values. The programme, which will run over the next two years, is coordinated by Haaga-Helia University of Applied Sciences in Helsinki, Finland, a country that has ranked first worldwide in media education for over a decade," UBB stated in a press release.

Through the activities planned in the programme - including roundtables with experts, training programmes and workshops for pupils, students, and teaching staff in pre-university and higher education, scientific research seminars, as well as student competitions in media production and innovative projects - the project seeks to develop skills and increase the engagement of teachers and journalism students from European universities in promoting media and information education at the societal level.

Additionally, the project aims to encourage civic and democratic participation by empowering young journalism students. They will contribute to disseminating knowledge and best practices in media and information education through involvement in informal and collaborative educational activities at the community level, and, as future journalists, are expected to become promoters and trainers in this field themselves.

The project Journalism Education Enhancing Media and Information Literacy in Europe: Network for Citizen-Centred Engagement (JEMILE) is funded by the European Union through the Citizens, Equality, Rights and Values (CERV) programme, Priority 2: combating disinformation, information manipulation, and interference in democratic discourse.
