Defense Minister Radu Miruta said unity and solidarity remain the only viable responses to the current vulnerabilities of Romanian society, emphasising that the lesson of the 1859 Union is still relevant today, in a context marked by social fatigue, insecurity and mistrust.

'The Union of 1859 still leaves us with a simple and timely lesson today: when we succeed in putting national interest above pride, above personal concerns, Romania moves forward. When we manage to listen to one another, even if we think differently, we become stronger. When we work together, neither poverty, nor fear, nor division can defeat us. Today, Romania does not need a union of borders. Today, Romania needs to unite trust,' Radu Miruta said in a speech delivered in Focsani's Union Square.

He linked the historical significance of Focsani to the current lessons for Romanian society, stressing that decisive moments in Romania's history were only possible through cohesion.

'Nothing truly important that has happened in this country has been achieved without unity and solidarity. And if we take a few fractions of a second to reflect on what happened here 167 years ago, we realize that while this was an administrative border between Moldavia and Wallachia, this line of demarcation never succeeded in separating people's hearts,' Miruta emphasised.

Addressing the current social and economic context, the minister spoke about the fatigue and dissatisfaction felt by the population and stressed the need for honesty from decision-makers.

'Romanians are tired. Tired of rising prices, tired of insecurity, tired of promises. Many parents wonder if they will be able to provide a better life for their children. Many young people, rightfully, wonder whether their future is better here or elsewhere. Many elderly count every coin carefully, yet with dignity. In the face of these realities, we cannot speak from above. In the face of these realities, we cannot hide behind grand words. And we must say clearly and truthfully that yes, we are going through a more difficult economic situation due to decisions that were not necessarily made with the people's interest in mind,' Miruta said.

Finally, he connected the values of the Union with the role of the Romanian Army today, highlighting the importance of solidarity in an unstable international context.

'The Romanian Army is the concrete expression of this solidarity. Romanian soldiers carry out their missions professionally, both at home and abroad, and they do not only defend borders. They defend fundamental values, freedom, democracy, and peace. (...) From here in Focsani, the City of the Union, let us remember that Romania was built with sacrifice, but most importantly, it has been maintained through solidarity. And it is through solidarity that we will continue forward,' Miruta added.

The Defense Minister participated alongside Romanian President Nicusor Dan in the Focsani Union Square events celebrating the Day of the Union of the Romanian Principalities.
