Romania has recorded this year historic records in nine crops, which shows the size of the potential that we have, Agriculture and Rural Development Minister Petre Daea stated on Monday, at a debate on the Romanian village, that takes place at the Romanian Academy.

"This year, historic records have been registered in nine crops which show, on the one hand, the size of the potential that we have, of the research [area] having produced valuable varieties and hybrids, but also of the brave farmers and citizens, village people who stayed tied to this place and managed, throughout the years to mobilise themselves, technologically speaking, to accomplish what we are, respectfully, presenting today and with the wish to commit ourselves to this area. (...) Agriculture remains the main source of the Romanian village," Daea stated.

He also mentioned that "due to research and not only," Romania has currently achieved the largest corn production in history, although he did not provide any figures in this respect.

And, in regard to wheat production, the Minister maintains that an 8 -10 tons production per hectare, as recorded in some agricultural units, was possible only with the help of agricultural research, "which continued regardless of the obstacles of time."

The head of the Agriculture and Rural Development Ministry (MADR) mentioned numerous times in the public space that "2017 is an exceptional year, an unprecedented one, with historic productions that Romania has not achieved so far" in wheat, rapeseed, peas, barley, two-row barley and sunflower, and to all of these, grain corn harvest and yet another two productions will surely add up.

In Romania, cereal crops occupy 60 percent of the country's surface. AGERPRES .
