The director of Transylvania International Airport Targu Mures, Peti Andras, told AGERPRES on Monday that the airport will switch to round-the-clock operations from the end of March, as 28 weekly flights to ten destinations are set to be operated, with at least 15,000 passengers per month.
The move to a 24/7 schedule comes amid the launch of nine new routes to Brussels Charleroi (Belgium), Larnaca (Cyprus), Paris Beauvais (France), Dortmund and Memmingen (Germany), Milan Bergamo and Rome Fiumicino (Italy), Basel (Switzerland) and London Luton (United Kingdom), in addition to the existing route to Budapest.
"By 28 March, the day before the first flight, which starts on Sunday, 29 March, we will all be ready - both the airport and all the other institutions that must shift from a 10-hour daily schedule to 24-hour operations, seven days a week. The aircraft based in Targu Mures will operate three flights a day, every day, which means 21 services to the new destinations in seven countries, to which the daily Budapest flight, operated from its base there, is added. In total, this means 28 weekly flights. From June, with the start of the summer season, we will also have seasonal charter flights to holiday destinations such as Antalya (Turkey), Crete (Greece) and Hurghada (Egypt), bringing the total to 35 weekly flights," said Peti Andras.
He added that the biggest challenge in switching to round-the-clock operations is staffing.
"The shortage of human resources is not specific to our airport, given the particular nature of airport operations. Under the current legislative framework, where we cannot hire new staff, and amid budget constraints, procedures for outsourcing certain services are more difficult. All flights scheduled to start on 29, 30 and 31 March are on track," Peti Andras said.
