Romania's Foreign Affairs Minister, Oana Toiu, held a telephone conversation on Sunday with Hungary's incoming Foreign Minister, Anita Orban, focusing on a new approach to Hungarian foreign policy "based on mutual respect and a shared ambition to improve the quality of life of our citizens".

"I called Anita Orban this evening, Hungary's future Foreign Minister, to congratulate her on the electoral victory. This was a first official contact with a representative of the incoming government of our neighbouring country, and an opportunity to share the joy of this historic moment of change. I expressed my admiration for the exemplary mobilisation of the Hungarian people and ethnic Hungarians, as well as for her team's genuinely people-focused campaign. Yesterday's result showed that no matter how much control some politicians may have over systems of power, it is not enough to retain it indefinitely. The power of citizens who choose to demand a better future through voting is sovereign, and Anita has repeatedly stressed that yesterday's choice was clear: a change of regime. Our discussion focused on a new approach to Hungary's foreign policy, based on mutual respect and the shared ambition to improve the quality of life of our citizens through closer cooperation. We also reviewed the regional formats chaired by Romania this year, which we see as major opportunities to strengthen our shared perspective in the region," Oana Toiu wrote in a post on X.

Oana Toiu also invited Anita Orban to visit Romania.
