A 28-year-old Romanian driver is under criminal investigation after he was caught trying to smuggle 19 migrants out of the country, hiding them in the lorry he was driving among car parts he was transporting to France.
The lorry was due to leave the country via the Nadlac II Border Crossing Point, but "based on the risk profile," border police checked the load. Thus, 19 foreign citizens were found among the car parts.
"During the checks, our colleagues established that the persons are citizens from Congo, Cameroon, Afghanistan, Ethiopia, Guinea and Bangladesh, some of them being asylum seekers, and others legally entered our country," the Arad Border Police said on Friday.
The Romanian driver is under investigation for smuggling migrants and the foreigners for attempting to cross the state border fraudulently.
