Romania's national men's handball team was dramatically defeated by the North Macedonian team, with a score of 24-23 (13-9), on Tuesday evening, in Herning (Denmark), in their last match in Group B of the European Championship - EHF EURO 2026 in Denmark, Sweden and Norway.
Nenad Koteski scored the winning goal for North Macedonia, in the last second, after Daniel Stanciuc had equalized a few moments earlier.
Romania started the game poorly and was led 4-0 and 5-1, after which it managed to enter the match, but the gap reached five goals again (12-7), with North Macedonia leading 13-9 at halftime.
Romania managed to equalize in min. 57, 22-22, but Cumpanici was disqualified after a video replay and the tricolors failed to achieve even a draw.
Denmark has 4 points, followed by Portugal - 3 points, North Macedonia - 3 points, Romania - 0 points. The top two ranked teams qualified for the main groups.
The tricolors lost the first match against Portugal (34-40), the team ranked fourth at last year's World Cup, and then lost to Denmark (24-39), the Olympic and World champion.
At EURO 2024, Romania ranked 22nd. This was the tricolor's fourth participation in the European Championship, after finishing 11th in 1994 and 9th in 1996.
