The Social Democratic Party (PSD) on Monday voiced unreserved support for Justice Minister Radu Marinescu and condemned the 'despicable manoeuvre' through which he was accused of plagiarism, immediately after announcing that appointments of senior prosecutors would not be political.

'PSD unreservedly supports the minister of Justice, Radu Marinescu and condemns the despicable manoeuvre through which he was accused of plagiarism, immediately after he announced that appointments of senior prosecutors would not be political in nature. This is clearly a political attack aimed at forcing the minister out of office. Had the move been made in good faith, the accusations against the minister would have been raised at the time of his appointment as head of the Ministry of Justice, not precisely now, when he has launched the legal procedures for appointing chief prosecutors, saying that he will not allow political interference,' PSD said in a press release sent to AGERPRES.

The Social Democrats also mentions, with regard to the plagiarism allegation, that Minister Radu Marinescu 'is in no way in the same situation as other officials targeted by similar accusations.'

'His doctoral thesis has already been validated by the doctoral committee and by CNATDCU [National Committee for the Certification of University Titles, Diplomas and Certificates], which found that the text complied with academic standards and the legislation in force at the time. You cannot accuse someone of breaching a law that was not in force at that moment. An individual cannot replace the competent state institutions and cannot issue verdicts that clearly contradict the official decisions of those bodies, all the more so when the person concerned is herself an impostor and has plagiarised her own undergraduate thesis. Therefore, PSD grants Minister Radu Marinescu its full political support to carry out his mandate and will firmly oppose any attempts to politically subordinate the justice system,' the release further reads.

An analysis by PressOne, carried out by Emilia Sercan, shows that 'more than half of the doctoral thesis in law of the minister of Justice, Radu Marinescu is plagiarised."
