President Nicusor Dan on Thursday signed the decree for the retirement of judge Ionela Tudor, the Presidential Administration informed.

She will retire starting 15 February.

On 5 February, the Superior Council of Magistracy approved the judge's request to retire.

Ionela Tudor became known for the statement 'Lia called me.'

'The Judges' Section of the Superior Council of Magistracy decided to forward to the President of Romania the proposals concerning the release from office, through retirement, starting 10 February, of Mrs Judge Ionela Tudor, President of the 10th Administrative and Fiscal Litigation and Public Procurement Section of the Bucharest Court of Appeal, delegated to the position of Vice-President of this court,' the minute of the decision reads.

Aged 51, Ionela Tudor initially worked as a lawyer (1998-2004), then entered the judiciary, serving in turn as a judge at the Fetesti Court, the Slobozia Court, the Calarasi Tribunal, the Ialomita Tribunal, the Bucharest Tribunal (2017-2021), and since 2023 at the Bucharest Court of Appeal.

Among the cases she handled was one in which she suspended the review of the doctoral thesis of former Prime Minister Nicolae Ciuca, accused of plagiarism, arguing the 'need for stability in the leadership of the state executive.'

On 11 December 2025, the leadership of the Bucharest Court of Appeal, made up of President Liana Arsenie and Vice-Presidents Ionela Tudor and Domnica Adomnitei, organised a press conference on the subject of revelations in a Recorder report. While Liana Arsenie was attempting to answer a question, Vice-President Ionela Tudor looked at her mobile phone, then leaned towards Liana Arsenie and whispered, 'She called me... Lia called me, I'm going to speak to her' and left the presidium from which the press statements were being made. She returned shortly afterwards and showed Arsenie the phone screen, reading what was written there: 'It is out of the question that... it is out of the question that Predoiu intervened. He did not suggest it.' This episode appeared to confirm what the press had reported over time regarding the influence of the head of the Supreme Court over other judges in the system.
