President Nicusor Dan admitted that there is a risk that a discontent a social nature, in its essence, could lead to hatred and xenophobia in our society.
"Obviously there is a risk that a discontent that in my opinion is of a social nature, in its essence, that comes from inequities in society, from corruption, could lead to hatred and xenophobia, precisely because it comes from a distrust of the country's political leadership, and this is a risk that we must reflect on. But the means we use to do so must be proportionate, so as not to fuel such a possible targeting of a part of society," the head of state told the national television station TVR.
The head of state believes that there must be ''a separation between pro-European conservatives, people who are open to dialogue, and pro-Russian conservatives and people who propagate hate speeches in society''.
"This distinction must be made. However, I would say that it is not my job to say how we are going to do it, how how we are going to make the society realize that distinction. And precisely because there is this tension, this difference of opinions, which I felt firsthand when I was the president of USR (Save Romania Union), now that I am the president of the country and I need to be a mediator, according to my job description, I do not want to define myself one way or another and I try from this position to take on those things that will help us see our common objectives," said the head of state.
