Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan announced that on Thursday he will inform the Constitutional Court about the consequences of the delay of certain decisions regarding the magistrates' pensions.
He warned that if the Constitutional Court postpones its ruling again, there is a "very high" likelihood that Romania will lose funding under the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRRP).
"An attempt was made last year to correct this injustice. A postponement was granted. Then a second attempt followed. These postponements have come in a cascade. If no decision is taken and another delay occurs, the probability of losing this money is very high. And I believe every institution must be informed about the consequences of certain decisions. For us, it is important to close all aspects related to these clarifications, because we have 2.6 billion euros to collect," Bolojan said during a press conference at the Victoria Palace
He emphasized the importance of resolving these issues so that Romania can receive the funds needed to complete the NRRP projects by August.
"The faster we sort out all the issues related to this payment request, the sooner we have this money available, which means we can pay contractors on time and maintain a good pace of works. Only after completing this payment request can we submit the next ones, and we must finalize these projects by August so that Romania does not lose this money," the prime minister explained.
Bolojan also brought to mind that access to PNRR funding depends on meeting the milestones Romania has committed to.
"One of these is milestone 215 concerning the magistrates' pensions, where we currently have nearly 230 million euros locked. From the discussions of our teams with the European Commission last week, the Commission considers that this milestone is not fulfilled. So the idea that the milestone has been met is false," he said.
