President Nicusor Dan expressed his hope on Monday that, in the next multiannual budget of the European Union, nuclear energy will be recognized and supported through European financing mechanisms.

"We support the completion of a single European market, because, in the economy, you are more competitive when you are bigger. We cannot have a single European market without having a single European energy market. Because we see how our competitiveness is affected by the differences in energy prices - I am talking about Europe, as a whole - I am glad that Europe is starting to reconsider nuclear, if we are talking about energy, and I hope that in the future multiannual financial framework we will have a space for nuclear. I think it is also important what Europe we are talking about. And I think it is important that each of us, especially political leaders, continue to support Europe, to manage to reconnect citizens to this construction, and we can do this including assuming the mistakes of the past, such as, for example, nuclear," the president stated, during the "Economist Romania Government Roundtable" event, organized by the editorial group The Economist.

Nicusor Dan welcomed the fact that the EU's future multiannual financial framework will focus on competitiveness, emphasizing, however, that this objective must not deepen the differences between developed and least developed countries.

"The main debate that we are going to have within the European Union by the end of this year is the future multiannual financial framework for 2028-2034. And here I want to welcome the fact that we all agree that part of the Union budget should focus on the competitiveness pillar. The discussion is to what extent the regulation of this competitiveness pillar will not widen the gap between more developed and less developed countries. And here, obviously, Romania's position is that this instrument must reduce some differences, so that we do not spend money again, and again, and again for cohesion in the years to come," said Nicusor Dan, during the event held at the Romanian Athenaeum.
