Better integration of Roma people into the labour market is a smart economic choice at a time marked by labour shortages and mounting economic pressures, Labour Minister Florin Manole has said, informs Agerpres.
Speaking at the POLITICO conference The Roma Factor: Catalysing Innovation and Growth in Europe, Manole said the European Union can no longer afford to leave untapped the potential of people who are willing and able to work. Against a backdrop of workforce shortages and growing economic strain, he argued, improving Roma participation in the labour market is a rational and forward-looking economic decision.
"I am well aware of all the labels, prejudices and simplistic stereotypes claiming that Roma people do not want to work. I also anticipate a range of critical reactions. But what matters is reality: we are talking about people who need equal access to education, training and stable jobs," the minister wrote on his Facebook page.
At the same time, Manole stressed that public resources must not and will not be wasted without results. "As Labour Minister, I believe the solution is clear: investing in people, in skills and in equal opportunities. Inclusion means work, dignity and contribution - something we must all pursue without prejudice," he said.
According to the Labour minister, a strong economy is one in which everyone who can work is supported to do so. "Romania and Europe need all engines running," he added.
