At least 37,500 teachers will participate in activities for the development of professional skills in relation to functional literacy under a project called "Intervention mechanism for functional literacy in pre-university education" which funding agreement was signed by Education Minister Daniel David, inform Agerpres.

More than 15,000 students from 176 selected schools nationwide will also benefit from the project.

Co-financed by the Education and Employment Program 2021 - 2027, the project "Intervention Mechanism for Functional Literacy in Pre-University Education (MIAF)" is a strategic one for the pre-university education system and supports the functional literacy of primary and secondary school students (ISCED 1-2) in the fields of reading, mathematics, science, civic education and digital education.

Integrated interventions will be designed and implemented that include the development of a framework for assessing the level of functional literacy (standards, item sets and assessment tests), the development of teachers' competences and the implementation of a pilot intervention mechanism aimed at the functional literacy of students, with a view to extending this mechanism nationwide.

The project aims at the following categories of target groups at least 15,000 students from 176 primary and secondary schools, selected at national level; at leas 37,500 teachers (teaching staff and management, guidance and control teaching staff), who will participate in activities for the development of professional skills in relation to functional literacy.

The duration of implementation of the project is 48 months, starting on October 1, being implemented in partnership with the Institute of Education Sciences, the teaching corps of the counties of Alba, Arges, Dolj, Ilfov, Suceava, and the county school inspectorates of the counties of Alba, Arges, Dolj, Ilfov and Suceava.

The total eligible value of the project is RON 207,160,606.80, of which the eligible non-refundable value is RON 166,709,127.57.

"An essential problem of our education system is related to the high level of functional illiteracy, which becomes a national security risk, making us vulnerable, as a country, to manipulation (through conspiracy narratives) and to underdevelopment - as a knowledge-based society. This project complements and allows ‘experimental pilots' for the recently introduced institutional approaches, namely remedial programmes for primary education (through 2 hours/week) and at the gymnasium/high school level (of the time per discipline available to the teachers, remedial programmes focused on: strengthening-fixing skills; developing target skills, not developed in the standard approach; the use of skills in daily life and the development of skills for performance," according to David .
