France is the third foreign investor in Romania and the fourth trading partner, generating 125,000 direct jobs and direct investment in excess of EUR 12.9 billion, the French Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture in Romania (CCIFER) said on Monday, on July 14, France's National Day.
"France remains one of Romania's most important economic partners, with a consolidated presence in the last three decades, actively contributing to the structural transformation of the economy and the development of local communities. With a diverse community of 600 members - large companies, start-ups, micro-enterprises, universities and NGOs - CCIFER stimulates the sustainable transformation of the economy through solid connections and innovative projects," reads a press statement released by the organisation, agerpres reports.
France, Romania's fourth largest trading partner, is strengthening its position as a strategic partner in the country's sustainable economic development, with a volume of bilateral trade that reached EUR 11.6 billion in 2024.
"In 2025, at CCIFER we have accelerated the Franco-Romanian partnership under an applied public-private dialogue, connecting the expertise of our business community with strategic opportunities in areas such as nuclear energy, artificial intelligence and energy security. On the road to a net-zero economy, it is essential to combine sustainability with competitiveness and economic stability. CCIFER remains a reliable partner of sustainable economic transformation, providing the public and the private sectors with a strong collective expertise, anchored in the reality of the market," CCIFER Chairman Nicolas Richard is quoted as saying in the statement.
According to the chamber, for over thirty years, France has played a key role in the modernisation of the Romanian economy, investing in strategic sectors such as: the automotive industry and energy; agriculture, agri-food industry and distribution; information and communication technology, telecommunications and aerospace; financial services, health, construction and building materials.
This economic presence is supported by 4,150 companies running on a majority French capital, 125,000 direct jobs, a solid network of SMEs and subsidiaries of large international groups.
In 2024, Franco-Romanian trade was maintained at a high level: French exports to Romania were standing at EUR 5.3 billion, and French imports from Romania at EUR 6.3 billion.
Trade is dominated by intra-sectoral and intra-group exchanges, reflecting close technological collaboration and the strength of economic relations.
In particular, bilateral trade in 2024 intensified in the agri-food and pharmaceutical sectors.
According to CCIFER, there is potential for growth in information technology, electrical equipment, textile industry.
The largest French companies - almost all included in the CAC 40 index - are present in Romania and hold leading positions in their markets. They are complemented by dynamic small and medium-sized enterprises, French entrepreneurs and local companies developed in partnership with French investors.
Together, they contribute positively to the dynamism of the Romanian economy, integration with regional and European value chains, supporting the sustainable development of communities through job creation, professional training and social responsibility initiatives.
The French Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture in Romania brings together 600 members and acts as an engine of economic transformation through the Business Marathon - 16 cities, 200 companies visited, 1,000 participants; educational projects co-financed by European funds (ProMes and StartStudent) - 500 young people connected to the labour market; social responsibility initiatives - 23,000 trees planted in Prahova County;10,000 leaders and experts involved annually in training and exchange of expertise.
