Accession to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) represents a decisive step for how the Romanian state will function in the coming years, comparable in impact to accession to NATO and the European Union, Finance Minister Alexandru Nazare said on Saturday in a post on his Facebook page.

"Accession to the OECD - the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development - is one of Romania's most important strategic objectives this year and represents a decisive step for how the Romanian state will function in the years ahead, comparable in impact to accession to NATO and the European Union. That is precisely why I believe this topic needs to be addressed more frequently and more consistently in the public space," the Finance minister wrote, according to Agerpres.

According to him, the OECD means clear rules, functioning institutions and public policies based on data and on the experience of developed economies - in practice, a new level of openness and a new stage of development for Romania.

"OECD accession is not just about status, but about how we govern: how we collect revenues more efficiently, how we invest better and how we build trust - both for Romanians at home and for those who live and work abroad. Recently, including through the practical discussions held in Paris with OECD representatives, Romania has taken concrete steps that bring us closer to the goal of accession in 2026 and to consolidating the reforms we have committed to," Alexandru Nazare added.

In his view, the economic benefits are clear: greater confidence and higher levels of investment, lower financing costs for the state, more effective and predictable public policies, a more resilient and competitive economy, and a better quality of life for Romanians in the country and for those who live and work in other parts of the world.

"Romania is on the right path, and accession to the OECD will mark a new historic moment, with a real impact on the country's development and modernisation. However, dialogue and the negotiation of benefits with the world's major economies are not won through declarations, but through consistency, seriousness and concrete results," the minister stressed.
