The film De capul nostru / On Our Own, the latest fiction feature by director Tudor Cristian Jurgiu, has been selected for the Forum section of the Berlin International Film Festival, where it will have its world premiere, according to a press release issued sent to AGERPRES on Thursday by Transilvania Film.
De capul nostru tells the story of a group of teenagers from a small Romanian town whose parents work abroad. Giving voice to a generation forced to grow up too early, the film explores how the absence of adult involvement during adolescence can lead to loneliness, emotional instability and impulsive decisions, against the backdrop of a desperate need to belong. Lacking support and real prospects, the young protagonists build their own community, finding refuge among other children and teenagers facing similar circumstances, according to the film's synopsis.
"There are around 150,000 children in Romania whose parents work abroad, and this phenomenon generates deep emotional trauma and fragile family relationships. That is where my interest in this story came from," Jurgiu said.
The selection of De capul nostru in the Forum section of the Berlin festival, which will take place from 12 to 22 February, confirms the international visibility of contemporary Romanian cinema and places Tudor Cristian Jurgiu's new project among the most relevant local productions of 2026, the press release notes.
"I am very happy for Tudor Jurgiu. It is a bold project, full of challenges, the main one being the work with first-time and non-professional actors. It is remarkable that this is the third film produced by our team (after Un loc sigur and 3 zile in septembrie) to be selected for, and to have its world premiere at, a major international film festival (after Tallinn and Rotterdam)," said producer Tudor Giurgiu.
The leading roles are played by Denisa Vraja, Vlad Furtuna, Mara Diaconu Ducica, Sofia Vasiliu, Dominique Toma, Steliana Balacianu and Robert Radoveneanu.
The Berlin International Film Festival is one of the world's most important cinematic events, bringing together each year filmmakers, industry professionals, critics and audiences from more than 100 countries. The Forum section, one of the Berlinale's most prestigious, is dedicated to contemporary auteur cinema and presents around 30 international productions distinguished by innovative narrative and aesthetic approaches. The Forum programme promotes films that transcend traditional cinematic conventions, addressing socially relevant issues in today's context.
De capul nostru is a Romanian-Italian co-production by Libra Films and Indyca, supported by the National Centre for Cinematography, Romanian Television, Eurimages - Council of Europe, Creative Europe Media, the Italian Ministry of Culture (MiBACT) and the Emilia-Romagna Regional Fund, with the support of Vodafone Romania and the Victoria Film Association.
In Romania, the film will be distributed by Transilvania Film and is scheduled for release later this year.
