Ex-PM Ciolos on modification of justice laws: There are battles we must not get tired to fight

Former Prime Minister Dacian Ciolos says that, in case the proposed modifications to the Criminal Code and Criminal Procedure Code will pass as they are now, "there is a risk that no citizen of this country will be safe in Romania, while the act of justice itself will be seriously damaged." 

"Unless you wish to be afraid to walk on the streets at night, unless you wish to be afraid for your parents and for your children and unless you wish for a state that protects the criminals, make yourself heard right now. We need to use all peaceful and legal means right now and to make ourselves heard. otherwise, our silence will be like a confirmation that what is happening right now is ok. There are battles that we must not get tired to fight. And the battle for honour and justice is maybe the most important of them. For these, it is never useless to fight. It is never too late! What is happening in Parliament right now is very serious. And not just because of the attack to justice, through modifications that are brought to laws without any debate and solid arguments. But also for the parliamentary majority seems like it can no longer stand to live together with the parliamentary minority. There is no wonder that the people seem divided when their leaders can not find a room for debate," said the former PM on his Facebook page. 

He also drew attention that the laws should be about the safety of the all Romanian citizens, about their fundamental right to be protected from criminals. 

"Ladies and Gentlemen MPs, regardless of the political party you belong to, you are the ones who, in the following days, will decide the fate of the battle between honesty and thievery in Romania. (...) Stop trying to protect a handful of people, who feel that they are close to the prison's gates, with the price of sacrificing million other people, who risk to remain helpless before the criminals. These laws should be about the safety of all Romanian citizens and about their fundamental right to be protected from criminals," said Ciolos. 

In this context, he showed that indifference to corruption, a weak justice system, "maybe means a better bread on the table of the corrupt, at leats for while." 

"But this also means less hospitals and schools, more poverty. For we cannot create welfare while we tolerate corruption," concluded the former PM.
