Actor Mircea Diaconu passed away on Saturday at the age of 74.
The actor's body will be laid to rest on Monday, between 11:00 AM and 4:00 PM, in the foyer of the Nottara Theatre, where colleagues and admirers will be able to pay their last respects, as institution representatives told AGERPRES.
Mircea Diaconu was born on December 24, 1949, in Vladesti, Arges County. He graduated in 1971 from the Bucharest Institute of Theatre and Cinematographic Arts, under the guidance of Professor Sanda Manu, according to the biography on the Nottara Theater website, https://www.nottara.ro/.
Since 1970 he acted in dozens of plays and films, and taught film acting since 1990. He was director of the Nottara Theatre from 2001 to 2011. He wrote several books and was a Writers' Guild laureate, Agerpres informs.
From 1998 to 2002, he was a member of the National Audiovisual Council (CNA) and from 7 May to 25 June 2012 he was Minister of Culture in the Ponta government.
From 2008 to 2012, he was a senator in the National Liberal Party group and from 2014 to 2019 he was an independent MEP in the ALDE group. In the 2019 presidential elections, he stood as an independent candidate with the support of Pro Romania and ALDE.
In 2000, he was awarded a For Merit National Order in rank of Officer for outstanding artistic achievements and for promoting culture, and in 2013 he received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the opening ceremony of the Bucharest International Film Festival.
