21 cases of West Nile virus infection since June beginning

The National Institute of Public Health (INSP) reported that between 2 June and 11 September, 21 cases of West Nile virus infection have been recorded in Romania - 20 confirmed and one probable case, informs Agerpres.

The cases were reported in Bucharest (8) and the counties of Alba (1), Braila (1), Dolj (1), Galati (3), Ilfov (1), Prahova (1), Salaj (1), Timis (2), Teleorman (1) and Vrancea (1).

The breakdown by age group is as follows: 10 people aged 70-79, 4 aged 60-69, 4 aged 50-59 and one case each in the age groups over 80, 10-19, and 40-49.

In this context, INSP specialists issued several recommendations for the public:

* Avoid exposure to mosquitoes by wearing long-sleeved clothing and long trousers;

* Use chemical mosquito repellents;

* Prevent mosquitoes from entering the home by installing window screens;

* Ensure stagnant water is drained from around the household;

* Remove containers with standing water and household waste from the property.
