CSM Bucharest defeated Danish team FC Midtjylland, 29-24 (13-12), on Sunday, at ''Ioan Kunst-Ghermanescu'' Polyvalent Hall in the Capital, in a match of the Women's EHF Champions League main Group 1.
CSMB managed a clear victory, not an easy one, however, considering that in the 48th minute it only had one extra goal on the scoreboard, 20-19. It was a psychological moment, with Paula Ungureanu, the best in the field, defending in a one-on-one situation against Helene Hansen. Romania's champion then managed four consecutive goals (24-19) and settled the fate of the game.
The Romanian team had a modest first half, being led by 4-2 (8th minute), 7-3 (12th minute), 8-5 (16th minute) and 12-11 (28th minute), but after the break the "tigresses" took the lead, 13-12, due to a goal scored from her own half by Majda Mehemedovic.
Scoring for the Bucharest team were Amanda Kurtovic (6), Cristina Neagu (6), Nathalie Hagman (4), Gnonsiane Niombla (3), Iulia Curea (2), Majda Mehmedovic (2), Oana Manea (2), Isabelle Gullden (2), Marit Frafjord (1), Line Jorgensen (1).
Scoring for the guests were Veronica Kristiansen (6), Helene Fauske (5), Annika Jakobsen (3), Judith Sans Serra (2), Helene Hansen (2), Emma Friis (2), Louise Burgaard (2), Mathilde Bjerregaard (1), Louise Elebaek (1).
The game was referred by Cypriot Georgios Panayides and Marios Andreou and the EHF delegate was the Finn Paeivi Mitrunen.
In the other games of the group on Saturday, NFH - Nykoebing Falster Handbold was defeated at home by Gyori Audi ETO KC, 32-24, and Rostov Don defeated in Ljubljana RK Krim Mercator, 35-26, .
In the last leg, Rostov - CSM Bucharest, Gyori Audi ETO KC - RK Krim Mercator and FC Midtjylland - NFH - Nykoebing Falster Handbold games are due to take place on 10 March.
In the standings, Gyori Audi ETO KC ranks first, with 14 points, followed by CSM Bucharest, 13 points (+37), Rostov, 13 points (+33), NFH - Nykoebing Falster Handbold, 5 points, RK Krim Mercator, 5 points, FC Midtjylland, 4 points. The first fourth qualify for the quarterfinals.
