Education trade unionists requested, on Monday, during a meeting with President Nicuşor Dan, the resignation of Education Minister Daniel David and the cancellation of the measures undertaken by the Government regarding the education system, announced the leader of the Federation of Education Trade Unions "Spiru Haret", Marius Nistor.
"We don't need promises, the president (Nicusor Dan - ed.n) took note of our requests, the first request being related to the resignation of the Minister of Education, Daniel David, and the second being related to the cancellation, the repeal of the measures that were assumed on Law 141. Regarding the first point, the president has not ruled out at the moment, and regarding the second point, the one related to the repeal of the measures that were assumed on Law 141, he proposed another meeting, in about two months at most, on which occasion it will be possible to come up with some exact figures related to the impact of the measures assumed by the Bolojan government. And, depending on these impacts, other decisions must be analyzed and made. This is what the president was able to convey to us", declared Marius Nistor, upon leaving the Cotroceni Palace.
He stressed that the protest actions will continue until the two objectives are met, specifying that a general strike "is not ruled out".
Education unions picketed the Executive headquarters and organized a protest march to Cotroceni Palace.
According to a joint statement sent on Sunday by the Federation of Free Trade Unions in Education, the Federation of Trade Unions in Education "Spiru Haret" and the National Trade Union Federation "Alma Mater", the protest action aims to draw attention to the need to resolve the problems faced by pre-university and university education personnel.
Education employees reject the budget deficit reduction measures adopted by the Government, which they claim negatively affect not only employees in the system, but also pupils and students - the direct beneficiaries of education.
"We are not in the streets for higher salaries, but for better conditions in the educational process, for justice. We are in the streets because the Government has taken a series of measures that directly affect our work and, implicitly, the education we provide," the unions claim.
According to them, the "efficiency" measures applied in the field of education through Law 141/2025 will have "a much higher cost" in the medium and long term, directly affecting the quality of education, the professional and social status of education employees, as well as the future of the primary beneficiaries.
"Our protest is to stop these abusive measures, through which we show that we do not agree that education and research in Romania should continue to be underfunded and disregarded. We must convince the government that spending on education is an investment, not a cost," the unionists said.
