Senate President Calin Popescu-Tariceanu maintains that during Wednesday's debate in the European Parliament on the amendments of the Justice laws in Romania, he witnessed "a contest of epithets and attacks thrust" by the Romanian MEPs, representatives of the Opposition parties against their political adversaries.
Tariceanu considers "it would be hard to imagine that a leader of the Democratic Party from the United States on a visit in Brussels could affirm about the harsh criticism that Republican President Trump has brought to the Justice no sooner than last week that it represents an unprecedented breach of the rule of law principles.
"It would be unimaginable that the same leader call the street protests against President Trump as manifestations of the popular will and as argument to reject the results of the vote. There is one golden rule that the representatives of any powerful state in the world respect: you do not export the internal political battle and you do not slander your country for an ephemeral gain," Tariceanu wrote on Facebook.
According to him, not the same can be said about the Romanian MEPs who represent the Opposition parties.
"During Wednesday's debates in the European Parliament on the Justice reform, I witnessed a contest of epithets and attacks thrust by the Romanian MEPs against their political adversaries. The protests of a misinformed minority were brought forward - many of its representatives, as even the PNL [National Liberal Party, the opposition - ed.n.] leader admitted in a recent interview, brought by the Opposition in the street - to clamor the breach of democracy in Romania. These spineless politicians have greatly harmed Romania in recent years, through misinformation and manipulation campaign in Brussels," Tariceanu said.
He congratulated instead MEPs Norica Nicolai, Mircea Diaconu and Renate Weber and also Social Democratic Party MEPs for "the way they bolstered Romania's interests in Brussels and the dignified way in which they replied, on Wednesday, calmly and with precise arguments to the lashing out of the politicians sent by the Opposition in the European Parliament."
Tariceanu invited all those interested to follow the debate online, to see "a confrontation between the fake-news campaign launched by the political opposition in Romania - without any reference to articles of law and many lies - and the precise argumentation and in Romania's interest of the ALDE-PSD representatives [Alliance of Liberals and Democrats, minor at rule - ed.n]."
Last but not least, I would like to bring to mind that I have had, in time, conflicts with political adversaries. Never have I exported them, however, in the relation with foreign partners and never have I criticised my country abroad, as the Opposition is doing, in the hope that it may turn around the democratically expressed vote in 2016 of millions of Romanians," Tariceanu added.
