Prince Radu is paying a public visit to the Arab Republic of Egypt, on the occasion of the 120th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries, established in April 1906, during the reign of King Carol I.
According to the website www.romaniaregala.ro, Prince Radu is representing Her Majesty Margareta, Custodian of the Crown, in Cairo, from April 15 to 20.
The visit is dedicated to strengthening bilateral relations between Romania and the Arab Republic of Egypt, inter-religious dialogue, economic, academic and cultural cooperation and the promotion of sustainable development projects.
On Thursday, Prince Radu met with the Grand Imam of Egypt, Ahmed Al-Tayeb.
The visit also included a tour of the Al-Azhar Observatory for Combating Extremism, the Al-Azhar Mosque, a thousand-year-old Muslim place of worship, and the religious complex that houses the first Islamic university built in Cairo, among the oldest in the world. The university has approximately 60,000 foreign students per year, from 108 countries.
Prince Radu was also received by the President of the Senate, Essam El-Din Farid, and bilateral relations in the fields of economy, politics, defense, international security, science, art and education were discussed at the meeting, according to the cited source.
Later, Prince Radu had a meeting with the Chairma of the Senate's Foreign Affairs Committee, Mohamed Kamal, and with the members of the committee, the discussions focused on various projects and the partnership between Egypt and Romania.
At the Presidential Palace in Cairo, Prince Radu met with Fayza Aboulnaga, presidential advisor for national security, where bilateral relations were discussed, among other things, and some projects were discussed.
The agenda of the visit also includes, among others, participation in a cultural evening organized at the Romanian Embassy on the occasion of the 120th anniversary of bilateral relations between Egypt and Romania and the opening of the AGERPRES photographic exhibition dedicated to the 160th anniversary of the founding of the Royal House of Romania.
Prince Radu also visited Egypt in 2006.
In the last century, the Romanian Royal Family made two historic visits to Egypt, the first in 1920, when Crown Prince Carol visited Cairo, Luxor, Alexandria and the Suez Canal, and the second in 1930, when Queen Maria visited Alexandria, Aswan and Cairo.
