The Social Democratic Party (PSD) announced on Thursday that it opposes the steps initiated by Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan and Deputy Prime Minister Oana Gheorghiu for the sale of "profitable state-owned companies", companies that have an essential role in the country's security architecture. It says that the starting such an initiative at the government level os "an act of defiance against Romanians."

"PSD opposes the steps taken by Prime Minister Bolojan and Deputy Prime Minister Oana Gheorghiu for the sale of profitable state-owned companies that have a major role in the country's security as a whole. The initiation of such an approach from the highest governmental level is an act of defiance against Romanians! PSD was not consulted on the sale of shares in strategic companies. There was no discussion in the coalition on this subject, and the PSD representatives in the government explicitly opposed the initiative of the prime minister and the deputy prime minister. The sale of the most profitable state-owned companies, in the midst of an energy and financial crisis, is an attack on the national security of the Romanian state. It is all the more serious as the general trend at the level of the member states of the European Union is to nationalise or redeem the assets of some state-owned companies, in order to strengthen their energy and economic security," PSD wrote in a press statement.

According to PSD, justifying these intentions by invoking the PNRR is a form of public disinformation.

"Romania is under no obligation to sell, in the midst of an energy and financial crisis, companies such as Romgaz, Salrom, Romarm, CEC Bank, the Port of Constanta or the Bucharest Airports Company. The only company referred to is Hidroelectrica, for which Romania undertook, at the time of drafting the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR), to float a 15% stake on the stock exchange, not 20%, as proposed by Deputy Prime Minister Oana Gheorghiu. Even in this case, given the conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East, which put a huge pressure on Romania's energy security, the prime minister, the deputy prime minister and the minister of European gunds should have renegotiated that milestone (122), not put up for sale the most profitable company in the national energy system."

PSD says that it supports the need to restructure some state-owned companies, but categorically opposes their sale, especially when they turn in sizeable profits and have a strategic role for the national economy.

Deputy Prime Minister Oana Gheorghiu announced that she presented in Thursday's government meeting an exploratory list on the possible listing of state-owned companies.
